Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

When you notice the seemingly perfect smile of a celebrity or public figure, it’s often a great set of dental veneers you’re admiring. Veneers have long been a popular treatment among movie stars and models, but advancements in dental technology have made veneers available to the general public.

Veneers are thin “shells” that fit directly over the surface of your natural teeth. They offer the ability to correct many different aesthetic issues at once, making them a versatile treatment that also offers great value.

Most dental veneers are made of porcelain, a material that can be shaped and finished to look just like your natural tooth tissue. Veneers are usually placed on the top teeth that are visible when you smile.

Veneers can correct many cosmetic issues, including:

  • Severe discoloration
  • Irregularities in shape and size
  • Gapped teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Worn down teeth

During your initial consultation, Dr. Kupferman will perform a thorough dental exam and discuss which treatments are best suited for your needs.

What happens during dental veneer treatment?

Dr. Kupferman might gather X-rays or digital impressions prior to beginning your veneer treatment. On the day of your procedure, he may administer a numbing injection to eliminate sensation in the treatment area.

He begins by removing a small portion of your natural tooth enamel to make room for the veneers. He then takes digital impressions using the PlanmecaⓇ system to determine the exact size and shape of the prepared teeth.

This information is sent to the lab to guide the creation of your custom veneers. You’ll receive a set of temporary veneers to wear until the permanent ones arrive.

At that point, you’ll return to the office to have Dr. Kupferman check your veneers for appearance and fit. Minor adjustments can be made prior to cementing the veneers into place, which completes the treatment.

Are dental veneers permanent?

Because veneers require removing some of your tooth enamel, they are considered a permanent treatment. However, even the best set of dental veneers will eventually need to be replaced.

You can expect your new veneers to last between 10-20 years. Avoiding habits like chewing ice or using your teeth to hold or pry objects will help them last as long as possible.

Getting a new set of veneers is as simple as the first procedure. Dr. Kupferman will remove your existing veneers, check your teeth and prepare them for a new set, and repeat the process of cementing the new set into place.
